Insurance Requirements

Standard Insurance Requirement

Suppliers and Contractors of the University of Chicago must have, at a minimum, the following insurance requirements before the Supplier or Contractor comes on campus to do work. The University requires a certificate of insurance showing the required insurance and limits. Some Services may require higher limits than listed below or other kinds of insurance, depending on the Services provided. All questions regarding these requirements should be directed to Procurement Services.

Minimum Limits of Insurance

  1. Commercial General Liability: $1,000,000 each occurrence
  2. Automobile liability: $1,000,000 combined single limit per accident for bodily injury and property damage
  3. Worker's Compensation and employer's liability: Coverage as required by state law; $500,000 Bodily injury/disease
  4. When providing "Professional Services" to the University, Supplier or Contractor shall be required to maintain professional liability insurance covering any errors and omissions (mistakes) with limits of at least $1,000,000.

The University of Chicago as Additional Insured

The University of Chicago, the University of Chicago Medical Center, their affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, trustees, volunteers and employees (collectively, “Additional Insureds”) shall be named as additional insureds under the Commercial General Liability, the Automobile Liability, and any excess or umbrella liability insurance policies.  Such policies shall stipulate that the insurance afforded the Additional Insureds will be excess only and will not contribute with the Vendor's insurance. These policies shall contain the usual cross liability wording indicating that except for limits of liability, the policies shall operate as though separate policies were issued to each insured and shall not contain any exclusion of suits by Additional Insureds.

Waiver of Subrogation

The University requires that the Supplier or Contractor’s insurers agree to waive all rights of subrogation against the Additional Insureds.

Indemnification

The University requires that the Supplier or Contractor agree to the indemnification provision within the agreement.
